FAQ
Job search, matching and tailoring questions, answered
How the match score works, what tailoring changes and never touches, the browser extension, the daily email, credits, and what happens to your data.
The basics
What is JAOS?
JAOS is a job search tool. It scores jobs against your résumé, tailors your résumé for the ones you choose, fills in applications with its browser extension, and keeps track of every application from applied to offer.
How does JAOS work?
Upload your résumé, and JAOS scores the jobs in its feed — from job boards and company career sites — against it. Pick the ones worth applying to, tailor your résumé for each, let the extension fill in the form, and track where every application stands.
Is JAOS free to start?
Yes. Creating an account, the scored job feed, application tracking and the browser extension cost nothing. Tailoring a résumé to a job uses credits.
What does it cost?
Each tailoring run uses one credit. Credits come in one-off packs, with no subscription, and card payments are handled by Stripe. Nothing else uses credits.
Matching
How is my match score worked out?
From six signals, out of 100 points: core skills (45), résumé evidence (25), experience level (10), domain & industry (10), work authorization (5) and education (5). It is worked out by rules, not by a language model, so the same profile and the same job always get the same score. A signal that can’t be judged for a particular job is left out, and the score is scaled over the rest.
What do Excellent, Strong, Moderate and Weak mean?
They are score bands. Excellent is 85 and up, Strong is 70 and up, Moderate is 55 and up, and anything lower is Weak.
Why does a job score low?
Most often because the posting asks for core skills your résumé doesn’t show. Every job lists the skills it found in your résumé and the ones it is missing, so you can see why.
Can I hide jobs that can’t work for me?
Yes. You can turn on filters that hide jobs needing a security clearance, jobs open to citizens only, jobs with no visa sponsorship, listings from staffing agencies, and likely ghost jobs. Each of these filters is off until you turn it on.
Résumés and tailoring
What files can I upload?
A PDF or a .docx file, up to 8 MB. Older Word .doc files aren’t accepted — save the file as .docx or PDF first.
How many résumés can I keep?
Up to five.
What does tailoring change, and what does it never change?
It rewords bullets to work in the posting’s keywords, adds the posting’s technical skills you don’t list yet to your Skills section, works keywords into your summary, and puts each job’s most relevant bullets first. It never changes your employers, past job titles or dates, or your education and contact details, and it keeps your numbers — a rewritten line that loses one gets it back.
What is the difference between Safe, Aggressive and Transform?
How far it goes. Safe rewords up to five bullets in each job and adds none. Aggressive rewords up to eight and adds new bullets for keywords your résumé doesn’t cover yet. Transform still tailors against the posting, but repositions your résumé toward a role you name — though a role close to your current one gets a normal tailor instead.
What do I get back?
Your tailored résumé as a DOCX, and as a PDF when one is produced, with a keyword report: the posting’s keywords your résumé already had, the ones that were added, and the ones still missing.
What happens if tailoring fails?
The credit comes back to your balance on its own.
Does tailoring the same job again cost a credit?
Yes. Every tailoring run uses one credit, including another run for a job you have tailored before.
The browser extension
Which browsers does the extension work in?
Chrome and Edge, on desktop. It isn’t available for Firefox, Safari or mobile browsers.
Which application sites does it work on?
It works best on application sites built with Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, iCIMS, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, BambooHR, Oracle Cloud, Workable, UKG and ADP. Other sites may only be partly supported.
Does the extension submit applications for me?
No. It fills in the form with your profile and résumé; you check it and submit the application yourself.
What is the daily email, and how do I stop it?
At most once a day, JAOS emails you up to five of your best-matching jobs. To stop it, use the unsubscribe link in the email, or switch it off in Settings.
Credits and payment
Do credits expire?
No. Credits stay on your account until you spend them.
Is there a subscription?
No. Credits are sold in one-off packs, and nothing renews.
Can I get a refund?
Payments are handled by Stripe. If something went wrong with a purchase, contact support.
Privacy and your account
Is my data secure?
Your résumé files and account data are stored encrypted. How the browser extension handles your information is set out in its privacy policy.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account at any time. For 30 days you can still restore it; after that your account and your résumé files are deleted.
